TALK SERIES | A programme of József Katona Theatre Budapest and Krétakör

József Katona Theatre
Budapest (HU) | 2013

In Krétakör and the Katona József Theatre’s talk series, Árpád Schilling invited directors and asked them about their artistic programmes, their strategies, and their perspectives on theatre policy. Creatives belonging to different generations and linked to divergent artistic directions took part in the discussions, held four times on the Katona József Theatre stage.

Schilling initiated the Theatre-makers with the following thoughts:

“Those active in Hungarian public life feel we do not live in our own age in Hungary. In fact, in the theatrical profession, it’s impossible to debate current questions: we must confront either the 19th century’s romantic ideals, or problems left behind by the 20th century’s ossified periods. I find this situation desperate, because I feel that as time dwindles we lose our dignity. Today we no longer need to write applications; we’ve definitively renounced the possibility of independent adjudicators; hardly a word is said about youths; and we speak of audiences only at the level of numbers, if at all. I’ve decided to ask Gábor Máté if he’d agree to a collaboration aimed not at creating a production but a sort of professional discourse. We’d like an event which makes talk about theatre interesting for audiences too.”
